Joe Colombo ‘Elda’ Lounge Chair, White Leather and Fibreglass, Produced by Comfort, Italy.

The Elda Chair was designed by Joe Colombo in 1965 and named after his wife. He conceived the idea of making a chair frame from fibreglass after visiting a boatyard. At the height of the space race and the rise of Pop Art, the designer was inspired to create pieces using new materials and futuristic styles. The chair was produced by Comfort, Italy, during the 1960s in a range of colour variations, of which the white shell and white leather is now the most sought-after. The Elda Chair has become an icon of 1960s design, and features in several films including The Spy Who Loved Me and The Hunger Games.

The age of the leather and fibreglass shell are consistent with 1960s manufacture and the underside of the upholstery bears the Comfort logos. The shell is in very good condition and the leather upholstery is in good aged condition, now slightly off-white, commensurate with date and use.
