An icon of Mid-Century design, this is an all-original example of the famous Eames Rocking (R) Armchair (A) on Rod (R) base.

Early 1950s 2nd edition example with lemon yellow shell in moulded plastic zenaloy (fibreglass reinforced plastic) made by Zenith, on an Eiffel design black oxide support and birch wood rockers. Remains of the Herman Miller still visible to underside.

Lemon yellow is one of the most desirable of the colour range brought out by Herman Miller in the early 1950s. This chair has large shock mounts but no rope edge, indicating it dates from 1952 onwards. This model was originally marketed as a rocker chair ‘good for young mothers’ and for some years Herman Miller presented a rocking chair to all its employees on the birth of their baby.

The different types of bases designed by Eames were intended to be interchangeable, so the chair can easily be disassembled for shipping.

The shell is in good original condition, slightly faded and with minor marks commensurate with age and careful use. The supporting structure is sound.
