The Eames Storage Unit (ESU), introduced in 1950, was a range of lightweight, fully modular storage systems designed to be customized by the user. The series was produced in three heights and two widths, with model numbers determined by the number of vertical levels in each unit.
The 400 series consisted of units four levels high, all featuring a two-bay width. Each section could be configured with open fronts or backs using wire cross-bracing, drawers, sliding elements, or panels finished in either brightly coloured or neutral laminates, as well as natural plywood.
All models were constructed with chrome-plated steel angles, legs, and cross supports. This example is an early version with six legs; around 1952, the design was revised to incorporate four more centrally positioned legs. The shelving and drawers are finished in birch and walnut veneer, complemented by baked enamel panels in various colours—including red, blue, and yellow—and “dimple” patterned sliding doors in natural birch veneer.

Condition:
The dimpled sliding doors have possibly been replaced at some point.
There is some damage/scraping to the back, where the unit has likely been positioned against a wall.
Overall in good condition for age and use.
