A rare original Captains Chair by American sculptor and furniture designer Wharton Esherick (1887-1970).

Drawing inspiration from the Shaker tradition of furniture design, Esherick created this iconic model at his studios in Paoli, Pennsylvania. The walnut frame is laced with leather straps to form the seat, with visible dowel joints to the stretchers and spindles. The underside of the backrest is carved with the designer’s initials and dated 1951 (see image).

The chair is in very good original condition, in line with age and use, with some areas of darkness to the leather as to be expected and a lovely patina to the walnut.

77cm high, 60cm wide, 55cm deep, seat height 44cm.
