George Nelson
Early ‘Coconut’ Lounge Chair
enamelled folded steel shell and chromed steel legs
recently upholstered in Maharam Checker upholstery
85cm high, 105cm wide, 82cm deep

Designed in 1955, the Coconut lounge chair was initially manufactured in the USA by Herman Miller – this is an original example of the 1st series with a bar to the front, which was missing from the later versions issued by Vitra.

The Maharam Checker fabric in emerald light/ivory was designed in 1965 by Alexander Girard during his tenure as founding director of the Herman Miller Textile Division (1952 to 1973). The foam has been replaced to conform with modern safety standards.
