Gio Ponti desk in light walnut with brass countersunk handles, on shaped tapering legs united by stretchers. The wood is in excellent condition with beautiful graining, and the two drawers to the front slide smoothly.
120cm wide, 70cm deep, 79cm high.
Accompanied by a Certificate from the Gio Ponti Archives signed by the designer’s son, Salvatore Licitra, giving his opinion that the desk is one of the pieces designed by Ponti and manufactured by Schirolli in Mantua in the 1950s for use as office furniture by the Banco Nazionale del Lavoro. The desks were all applied with a label bearing a stock number for the bank’s inventory – sadly the one on this desk has become detached and been lost at some point, but you can see the pin marks where it used to be.
Several similar designs were produced by Ponti and some examples of this desk have a formica top, but this example displays the beautiful grain of the natural walnut.
Another similar example of this desk, slightly wider at 140cm and with the bank’s reference numberplate still attached, is also available in our Tetbury shop – further details and images available on request.
