Jean Prouvé (1901-1984)
‘Démontable’ Chair, Model No. 300, circa 1950-2
manufactured by Atelier Jean Prouvé, Nancy, France
ash plywood, folded steel sheet and tube enamelled in original ‘Brun Van Dyck’ red
81cm high, 40cm wide, 47cm deep, seat height 48cm

Prouvé created the ‘demountable’ chair in response for a request from the Cafeteria des Arts et Métiers at the Cité Internationale Universitaire in Paris. The chairs were intended to be delivered in parts and easily assembled in situ. This model was later superseded by Prouvé’s ‘Metropole’ model 305 design which was more economical to produce.
