This iconic 1960s mini bar / bookcase / side table was designed by Ernest Race in 1963 at the invitation of Isokon’s founder Jack Pritchard to redesign the original bottleship by Egon Riss. The Bottleship Mark II was produced by Isokon in limited numbers for just a few years and was available in either birch or cherry ply, and it is rare to find an early example in as good condition as this.
Of similar dimensions to Race’s early creation, the Penguin Donkey, the Bottleship’s ingenious design incorporates a bookcase/magazine rack to the sides, internal sections for storing bottles and glasses, and a hinged lid to provide a table surface, with cut-out hand holds to the sides to allow it to be moved easily as required.
Constructed in cherry ply, with painted surface to the interior of the lid, this beautiful design is both an icon of modernist design and a very useful piece of furniture.
