Lucie Rie was an Austrian-born British studio potter known for her innovative and modernist ceramics. Born in Vienna, she studied at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule before fleeing to London in 1938 to escape Nazi persecution. Rie established a pottery studio in London and became renowned for her minimalist forms, subtle glazes, and distinctive sgraffito techniques. Her work gained international acclaim, particularly through her collaboration with fellow potter Hans Coper. Rie received numerous accolades, including being made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1991. She continued to create exquisite ceramics well into her 80s, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of modern pottery.
