Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a Finnish lighting designer and metalsmith who founded Oy Taito Ab in 1918. The company became a leading force in Finland’s lighting industry as electrification increased demand for electric lamps. Tynell’s designs evolved from chandelier-inspired forms to functionalist and Art Deco styles, incorporating materials such as glass, fabric, cardboard, and later brass. His functionalist work focused on practical use, light quality, and the nuances of opal glass. After the Second World War, brass became central to his designs, contributing to his international success, particularly in the United States.
