The Blow inflatable armchair was designed in 1967 by Jonathan De Pas, Donato D’Urbino and Paolo Lomazzi and manufactured from electronically welded transparent PVC (polyvinyl chloride) by Zanotta, Italy.
This is an original example, in clear PVC, with a removable seat cushion and an air pump, all still folded up within the box. Box measures 56.5cm wide x 34.5cm deep x 18cm high. Chair when inflated measures 101cm wide x 90cm deep x 75cm high. The last photograph is a stock image showing how the chair will look – it is not this same chair, which has never been inflated.
The chair is constructed from thin sheets of PVC that have been joined together using high-frequency welding which causes the molecules of the PVC to move and get hot, and seals the cells of the material together permanently.
The chair was originally produced in yellow, blue and red, as well as clear, PVC
